repainting Talisman
It should`nt be long before the refit of Talisman starts, she has been hand painted prior to me buying her and its not very good, crap actually, so I`m going to need some tips on preparation of the hull surface etc, what are the best paints to use and how are they best put on, roller or brush? all help appreciated, Steve

RE: repainting Talisman
I have painted two boats myself in the past, with help from my Dad who has painted loads of wooden boats. I use International Toplack paint, its really nice to apply and pretty hardy too. The technique we used was to first sand off any loose paint (using an orbital sander), and get a good surface for the paint to key onto. Then roller or brush on undercoat, it doesnt matter which at this stage. For the next coat we mixed undercoat with topcoat 50/50, apply with a roller and smooth out with a brush, light strokes. Then lightly sand by hand to remove any runs etc, and coat again with topcoat with a roller and smoothing with a brush. Then lightly sand again and do one more coat, this would be enough but theres no reason to do more coats if you wanted.
![]() I will use that tecnique on my boat when she has a repaint.

RE: repainting Talisman
It really is a good quality paint, and very easy to touch up should you scratch it!

Hello guys, I learnt from a professional paint shop for yachts to use a very good quality brush. And your brush strokes should be from top to bottum. I mean vertical strokes Then you never see strokes when the paint is dry and the light is striking along the hull. Most people go horizontal with their strokes, and they say, you always see them. RE: repainting Talisman
Hi Steve,
How is the planning with Talisman? I guess it is not only painting you have to do. There was another cleo friend with a 700 Super Weekender. He liked to find a hard top. Ever heart if the are available? In the Galley you can find a guy that made a cabin onto the hull. Does not look bad. I believe it is the boat with the name Wanderer. RE: repainting Talisman
Yes Rinus, I have seen the pictures of wanderer, I intend building my wheelhouse in marine ply, I would have liked to keep the boat original but I will need to keep the electronics in the dry and also have a bit of security so a wheelhouse it is for Talisman

RE: repainting Talisman
Hi Steve,
So you are planning to make a kind of hard top. You never considered to make a soft top? As then the boat( probably the first Week-ender) will stay original. And when you buy a good quality it will stay perfect for a long, long time. And you could make it in two parts. So when the sun is shining very hard( when...) you could hide under the canopy. It is just a thought. Rinus Done by Rinus, owner of Waterman, a Cleo 850 The Netherlands |
